Report: Derby County launch summer move, in pole position for ‘wonderful’ 27-goal striker wanted by Championship rival

Derby County has indicated interest in one prolific goal scorer, matching their Championship opponents.

Last season, James Collins, Martyn Waghorn, Conor Washington, Tyreece John-Jules, and Dwight Gayle were among the Derby County strikers that suffered injuries.

After making several attempts to get Sheffield Wednesday’s Lee Gregory and Michael Smith, the Rams were able to sign Gayle on a free transfer.

Though it didn’t stop them from getting promoted to the Championship, they will now need to replenish their roster in order to prevent falling back to the third division too soon.

Now that three of their forwards are out of contract, Paul Warne is allegedly looking to recruit a new No. 9 in League One.

Derby County want 27-goal striker this summer

Derby may take into consideration a summer bid for Charlton Athletic forward Alfie May, according to the Sunday Mirror (page 62).

League Two team Gillingham and Stoke City have reportedly expressed interest in the “wonderful” attacker.

May, who has scored 43 goals in 85 games for Cheltenham Town, has been a League One star in recent years.

After that, in the summer, the 30-year-old moved to Charlton and has since impressed, scoring 27 goals across all competitions.

In addition, he was named to the EFL League One Team of the Season, earned the EFL Player of the Year award at the 2024 London Football Awards, and concluded the season as League One’s top scorer.

May’s contract is set to expire next summer and so could be available before he enters the final 12 months of his deal, however the report also claims that the striker is keen to stay at The Valley.

Is Alfie May good enough to lead the attack?

Derby’s prospects of remaining in the Championship might depend on how well they attack, since their current group might not be suited for life in the second division.

May has been a huge success in League One, although he hasn’t actually won the championship yet.

In addition, he will soon turn 31 years old, joining several Rams attackers who are already in their 30s.

Derby may find it worthwhile to take a chance on this move if he doesn’t cost too much, although he might not be a player who can easily go up a division.

Gayle is one player who made a real positive impact for Warne’s side following his late arrival, but he completely flopped during his time with Stoke City.

The Midlands club need players who have the experience and the drive to succeed in such a difficult league.
