Sunderland are expected to face transfer ramifications in the coming months after a season

that began with plenty of play-off promise but finished in a disappointing 16th place result.

Sunderland Transfer News

If people at the Stadium of Light could travel back in time,

it would be intriguing to see if they would have replaced Tony Mowbray with Michael Beale instead. When the former left,

the Black Cats were competing hard for a top-six spot, but by the time his replacement went,

their play-off hopes appeared to be more of a pipe dream.

Mike Dodds’ interim tenure in charge did not help matters either,

ending in a forgettable season on Wearside. Sunderland is now looking for their next manager, which is a crucial decision.

Paul Heckingbottom and Steve Cooper have been linked, but it’s unclear who will take the hot seat.

Whoever it is, they will allegedly face an immediate transfer crisis as a result of a disappointing season at the Stadium of Light.

According to Graeme Bailey, Sunderland will lose Trai Hume this summer as a result of their troubles.

Bailey told Sunderland AFC News: “I think you’ll also lose Hume at right-back.

They were hoping to sell the player you signed from PSG [Pembele],

but I believe one of the right-backs will leave.

They had originally signed the PSG lad to replace Hume, but he hasn’t gotten much of a chance, has he?”

It’s a significant blow for Sunderland, who might lose not one, but two right-backs,

leaving them with little alternative but to look to the transfer market for help.

Hume’s departure would be particularly distressing, considering his starting role and high praise from Mowbray,

who said: “I advised him to be patient, that there will be injuries and thus opportunities, and to make sure that he was ready to grab it.

“Make me think ‘wow’. That’s what occurred; Lynden has moved on, Luke has taken over as centre defender,

and Trai has established himself in that position.”

The departure of Hume would mark the end of Sunderland’s season.

As much as Sunderland will want to focus on the positives and begin a new era at the Stadium of Light,

Hume’s departure would be a significant blow, even if the appropriate offer comes in to clear his rumoured £3k-per-week salary from their pay line.

His departure would serve as a warning indication of the importance of at least competing for a spot in the Championship’s top six,

and then, of course, promotion to the Premier League.

With or without Sunderland, Dodds feels Hume has top-flight quality,

having lauded the right-back via Chronicle Live back in March.

Dodds stated that if Trai continues on his current course, he will join the Premier League.

That’s how good I believe he is. When it comes to full-backs in this league,

Trai is unquestionably one of the greatest, if not the best, and I don’t think there will be many disagreements about that.”

If he does leave, as Bailey anticipated, Hume may end up in the Premier League this summer.

At 22 years old, he undoubtedly has the time and potential to excel at the highest level.
