The Rangers had a daunting task in their championship match against Celtic because

of John Lundstram’s audacious challenge, which Philippe Clement felt he could not even

begin to defend. After Willie Collum had first issued Lundstram a yellow card, the pursuing

Ibrox squad had just  made a comeback through Cyriel Dessers when Lundstram crashed into

Celtic full-back Alistair Johnston and was given a red card. The referee was asked to review

the incident once more. With ten men and down 2-1, Rangers’ already remote odds of winning and keeping their title

ambitions alive were significantly diminished. Clement virtually gave up the title.

“I’m not gullible,” he declared. He was appalled at Lundstram’s behaviour. He remarked,

“Of course, playing with ten makes it more difficult, and that is something I never want to see.

The group and Lunny are the first to know that.” It is not a tackle I want to see anywhere on

the pitch. It was completely needless there.

“It was a moment of poor judgement on the part of a player, but I also remember the great work

he has done for the Rangers over the past few months and the entire season.” He is the first to

admit that he is mistaken. It had absolutely no justification.

Before then, we also had a few excellent opportunities to score, and you are still in the game.

At that point, the game was still in play, but it was much, much harder. On the plus side, the

group once more demonstrated resilience. They persisted even though it would have been

simpler to quit up in a place devoid of supporters, when trailing and facing ten men.

We continued on. Lundstram was crying in the dressing room, he reported. He claimed,

“He didn’t speak.”
