JUST IN: Ange Postecoglou reveals Son Heung-min transfer plans

The possibility that Tottenham Hotspur would sell captain Son Heung-min this summer has

been categorically refuted by Ange Postecoglou.

Son’s Spurs contract expires in2025, and his future has come under scrutiny in

some quarters after Postecoglou revealed recently that the team must be merciless in cutting some of its finest players.

A reporter informed Postecoglou during a news conference held in advance of Burnley’s visit on

Saturday that they assumed Son would not be let go and would instead remain at Tottenham.

“Jeez, that’s a huge leap for you, mate!” Postecoglou shot back.

“How audacious it is to assume that Sonny will play a role in our future! Indeed, he will play a role in our future.

In anticipation of the 2023–24 season, Postecoglou named Son the team’s new captain.

The South Korean has recovered this season after a rather underwhelming 2022–2023 campaign,

tallying 17 goals and nine assists in 32 Premier League outings thus far.

When Spurs play Burnley, they hope to snap a four-game losing streak and cut the deficit to four points with a

win over fourth-place Aston Villa.

Although Postecoglou acknowledged he does not yet consider his Tottenham team to be a “Champions League club,”

he emphasized that he is still expecting to return to the top four before the season ends.

Champions League qualifying looks doubtful.

“I never claimed to be uninterested in being among the top four.

“I made it clear that placing in the top four does not guarantee that we will be the team I want us to be the following season,” he stated.

That won’t be what makes us unique. I never give up,

and I’d be shocked if someone in my position at this level entered the fight with anything less than

a full dedication to succeed since the alternative is always failure.”

He added: “Finishing fourth and getting into the Champions League does not make you a Champions League club,

in my opinion. It just gives you an opportunity to be in there.

To me, to be a Champions League club and to be at that level requires more than finishing fourth in one year.

“Do I believe right now we’re a Champions League club? No, we’re not. That’s my belief.

We’ve still got work to do. That doesn’t mean I don’t want us to reach Champions League.

That’s self-defeating in terms of what I’m trying to create.

Should we finish fourth and make Champions League,

it isn’t going to change my view of where we’re at and what we need to do in the summer. That’s still real clear in my head.”
