Interview with John Mousinho: Portsmouth’s head coach on channeling negativity as promotion hopes loom ever closer
Exclusive to Sky Sports: Portsmouth’s head coach John Mousinho discusses his team’s “unique” injury list,

a pivotal final run, and utilizing the anxious atmosphere around Fratton Park. He also discusses not aiming for an ideal points total from now until the end of the season.

With only seven games left in the season, Portsmouth may be leading League One by five points, but John Mousinho is still being cautious.

That may be expected given that he has only been in his first managing position for 14 months.

He has had three promotions during his playing career, so being the leader is nothing new to him.

That’s not his main worry. He can’t help but think about how Sheffield Wednesday broke the previous record by amassing an incredible 96 points in the regular season. and did not ascend on its own.

“Last year was the perfect example; you can have a target and you still might fall short,

” he continues. “Even if we meet the conventional goal of rising, it might not be sufficient. It’s not too risky.”

Except for a single week at the end of November, Mousinho’s team has been at the top of the standings since mid-September.

After a stellar performance in February, in which they took 13 of the 15 available points,

he was named the Sky Bet League One Manager of the Month for the second time.

Their victory over Burton on March 12 brought them to 80 points for the first time in their history.

However, after a 12-year absence, injuries have made every effort to thwart the drive for a return to the Championship.

Regan Poole, a summer acquisition, suffered an ACL injury in November that ended his season.

Alex Robertson, a young midfield player on loan from Man City, suffered a major hamstring tear that ended his chances of playing after New Year’s Day.

They bolstered in January, bringing in Myles Peart-Harris from Brentford on loan and adding Callum Lang, Owen Moxon, and Tom McIntyre as permanent additions.
