West Ham’s fresh signing could get blasted

I believe David Moyes still has a lot of life in him, and I was startled when West Ham declared his departure this week.

Last season, Moyes guided the Hammers to European Conference League victory, their first major trophy in 44 years.

Following that victory, West Ham advanced to the Europa League quarterfinals this season and are presently ranked ninth in the Premier League.

Granted, no silverware this time around, but I wouldn’t argue Moyes has not succeeded at West Ham, especially given the departure of Declan Rice, perhaps their finest player, to Arsenal at the start of the season.

Supporters have criticized his manner of play, but come on. This is West Ham, and winning in Europe should make you all very happy.

Moyes will be replaced by Spaniard Julen Lopetegui, who has had a tumultuous career.

After periods at Real Madrid and as national coach with Spain, both of which resulted in his dismissal, he took over at Wolves, where, according to one or two supporters, he did not set the world on fire.

Lopetegui left Wolves after claiming that he wasn’t given enough money to spend, and I doubt the route to West Ham will be paved with gold.

But getting back to Moyes, I believe the best term to characterize him is steadfast.

The greater part of his career has been at the top level, and I still believe he was not given a fair chance when he succeeded Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United. They were, after all, the largest shoes to fill.

Aside from a setback with Sunderland, he has never disappointed any of the teams he has managed.

He has been a Premier League manager for 22 years, with the exception of a time with Real Sociedad in Spain. That’s some movement.

Moyes is 61 years old, four years older than Lopetegui. I believe growing up on the tough streets of Glasgow has lent Moyes a much more worn appearance.

He won’t have trouble finding a new suitor. Spartak Moscow is reportedly interested in the Scot. As for Lopetegui, only time will tell. But, over time, I believe West Ham fans will miss Moyes more than they understand. VNS
