Russell Martin says Neil Warnock’s advice has refreshed Southampton

Russell Martin followed the wise counsel of veteran former Middlesbrough manager

Neil Warnock is to take his Southampton team out to dinner following their humiliation at the hands of Leicester.

but he claims he did not choose the Chinese.

Southampton, fresh off a 2-1 victory over fellow promotion candidates Leeds on the road last weekend,

travels to West Brom on Sunday for the opening leg of their Sky Bet Championship play-off semi-final.

Following three straight losses for the Saints, their dreams of earning automatic

Promotion to the Premier League were dashed with the victory at Elland Road.

During his tenure as manager, Warnock achieved a record eight promotions.

While serving as a TV analyst, he advised Martin to take his players “for a Chinese” after they were humiliated 5-0 at Leicester.

“I think someone as wise and as experienced as Neil Warnock tells me to take the team out for a meal;

I think he’s spot on,” Saints manager Martin stated.

It was a pleasant dinner, but it wasn’t Chinese food; rather, it was a little healthier.

“I appreciate his advice. He was correct in saying that the players simply needed it after such a demanding schedule.

“The employees as well. Here, the owners and the executive team were all gathered together.

“We got some food and worked hard in the morning. Together, we set the stage for the future during our time together.

I believe it was wise counsel, which we followed.

Southampton defeated Albion twice, at home and away.

to end the Championship season in fourth place, 12 points ahead of West Brom.
