England midfielder anticipated to return to the Etihad next week after missing the match against Luton

A calf injury terminated Kalvin Phillips‘ season, and he played the last game of his dismal loan stay at West Ham.

The issue kept Phillips out of the team’s 5-0 loss to Chelsea last weekend, and he hasn’t recovered in time for

Saturday’s season-ending home match against Luton, which will also mark David Moyes‘s final appearance at

the London Stadium.

Phillips is likely to return to the Etihad at the beginning of next week to continue his recovery,

ahead of a summer in which his future is uncertain. Even if he were to return to fitness,

he would not be allowed to play against parent club Manchester City on the final day of the next weekend.

Although both teams were initially willing to include a buyout option as part of the loan move, the parameters

of the agreement could not be reached.

This implies that the midfield player, who joined West Ham in January, will be leaving after only three starts in

all competitions.

In an attempt to secure a spot in the England team for this summer’s World Cup, the 28-year-old relocated to

the London Stadium in the middle of the season.

But amid a rough four months in east London, the former Leeds player has played himself out of Gareth

Southgate’s plans.

During his debut against Bournemouth and the subsequent loss to Manchester United in February,

Phillips made costly mistakes that resulted in goals. Later that month, he was sent off in the defeat against

Nottingham Forest.

He entered the game off the bench as the Hammers led 3-1 against Newcastle in March,

but he let up the penalty that set off a thrilling late comeback by the home team to win 4-3,

a result that severely damaged West Ham’s chances of qualifying for Europe.
