Breaking News; Brendan Rodgers admits that having a Celtic player in the squad played a significant role in his return to the club.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers claims that the presence of his captain, Callum McGregor, had a significant role in the Northern Irishman’s return to coach the club.

Rodgers took over from Ange Postecoglou last summer, beginning a second term at Celtic Park following a trophy-ladenthree seasons from 2016 to 2019.

The Northern Irishman, who left Celtic for Leicester City to conclude his first tenure at the club,

relied largely on McGregor at the time, and he claimed that knowing the quality of players and personalities at the club made his decision to return simpler.

Speaking ahead of Saturday’s Old Firm match at home to Rangers, Rodgers said of McGregor: “It was one of the major elements in my return.

I have to be honest, knowing he was here helped me tremendously in that first season.

He played for a number of positions. His opinion of the game is the highest ever. I’ve been fortunate to work with several exceptional captains

He is right up there with them.

“All captains do things differently. Callum’s improvement as a player and attitude on the field has impressed me.

Being captain of a club like Celtic requires both charisma and humility, which Callum possesses. “He’s an exceptionally fantastic player.

He played a significant role in my decision to return here. To work with someone like that, knowing what he would bring, knowing that his professionalism

is the highest of any athlete I’ve ever worked with, and then his performance level. It’s wonderful to see. He’s become into a fantastic footballer and a wonderful person.”
