“Position of strength” – Keith Wyness makes Leicester City claim amid points deduction threat

Speaking on Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, former football CEO Keith Wyness feels

Leicester City is in a strong position to face charges for financial violations following its promotion to the Premier League.

The Foxes suffered a wobble in the latter parts of the 2023/24 season, and after losing such a large lead at the top of the Championship table,

it seemed probable that they would finish in the play-offs and not be promoted back to the top flight on the first attempt.

However, they were able to pull themselves together just in time to finish in the top two and win the second-tier title.

However, the Foxes may face difficult times in the coming months,

with the club perhaps needing to sell players this summer in order to have the best chance of complying with financial requirements in the future.

They offloaded a lot of players last summer, and more could be on the way to avoid harsher punishments.

Keith Wyness on Leicester City’s points deduction threat

After losing £89.7 million in the 2022/23 season, any expenditure this summer will need to be limited,

but this could mean that their squad isn’t completely prepared for the following season.

In addition, they may face a points deduction following a charge from the Premier League in March.

In fact, a points reduction appears unavoidable,

with Everton and Nottingham Forest being punished points during the 2023/24 season for financial irregularities.

However, Wyness believes that promotion will allow Leicester to select the best lawyers to present their case, putting them in a good position.

He stated: “Leicester has cases pending against the Premier League and the EFL. I’m still not sure when those will arrive.

“As I understand it, they might start next season with a points deduction right away.

I’m not sure whether they’ll challenge that.

There are currently too many loose ends to make decisive pronouncements or provide recommendations on this.

“It’s another messy situation caused by a large grey area in the rules.”

“For Leicester, at least they have been promoted. I’d rather be in that scenario than argue my case in the Championship.

“They are in a position of strength. They’ve brought the Premier League money in to help pay these fantastic lawyers we’ve become familiar with.”

Leicester City will need to be wise in several areas to survive the next season.

Leicester will need to engage some excellent lawyers to offer them the best chance of winning the lawsuit.

This could reduce the number of points docked for their charge.

They will also need to be financially prudent in order to maximise their chances of survival while living within their means.

On the pitch, Enzo Maresca may need to change his playing style to improve Leicester’s prospects of staying up in the long run.

Getting points for the board is more important than style.
