Ex-brighton striker has been appointed as Stevenage FC manager on a permanent basis
League One opponents Stevenage of Blackpool have named Alex Revell their permanent first-team manager.
The 40-year-old, who managed the team from February 2020 to November 2021, is starting his second term
with the team. He returned to the team as a youth academy coach, rising to the position of first-team coach
under Steve Evans’ leadership. After Evans left to join Rotherham United, he took over as manager of the team
temporarily.
Rather than working together at his new job at New York Stadium, Evans and Revell will face off as competitors
when the 2024–2025 League One season starts. Throughout his 20-year playing career, Revell made
appearances for the Millers, MK Dons, Cardiff City, and Brighton & Hove Albion.
“We’ve taken our time to consider various candidates, but we believe the dynamics of our squad dictated that
Alex was the natural successor to Steve,” chairman Phil Wallace said in a statement posted on the club’s official
website. In addition to being a part of the original recruitment metric and knowing the players, Alex is well
respected within the locker room.
“However, we wanted to improve our chances of success on the pitch by providing an experienced
coach/assistant manager with in-game expertise and years of experience winning games.”
Neil Banfield, a former first-team coach for Arsenal under Arsene Wenger, will back Revell. He had a close
working relationship with Michael Beale at Rangers and QPR. After playing for Woking, Scott Cuthbert is
rejoining the team and will support Revell as an assistant coach.
Following Evans’ departure for Rotherham, Revell managed to secure a 1-1 draw against Oxford United, the
play-off finalists, then defeated Cheltenham Town 2-1 to condemn them to a fourth-tier season. This season,
Boro came in ninth place, two points behind Blackpool.
