Atletico Madrid to persist with 5-4-1 system for Celta Vigo clash despite Antoine Griezmann return

With Antoine Griezmann suspended, Atletico Madrid used a different lineup for their encounter against Mallorca at Son Moix last weekend, abandoning their 5-3-2 formation. Diego Simeone went with a 5-4-1 formation, Angel Correa starting as the only striker and being surrounded by Marcos Llorente and Samuel Lino. They won 1-0 and recorded their first clean sheet in three months, so it paid off as well.

Simeone plans to stick with the 5-4-1 even if Griezmann will be back in the starting lineup for the forthcoming game against Celta Vigo, according to Marca. Griezmann and Correa are supposed to switch positions between the center and the right, while Rodrigo Riquelme and Lino stay on the left. In a deeper role, Llorente would be used as a wing-back.

Atletico Madrid is getting closer to the final Champions League qualifying slot and will be looking to close off the season on a positive note. They seek to defeat Celta at the Civitas Metropolitano in order to secure the first of two victories that would virtually rule out Athletic Club’s chances of catching them.
