Wayne Rooney, a former striker for Manchester United and England, announced his resignation as head coach of Derby County on Friday.

One year before his contract expires, Rooney is leaving troubled Derby County, who were demoted to League One last season.

“I have been keeping a close eye on developments pertaining to Derby County’s ownership throughout the summer.”

“I decided it was time for me to leave the club, and I visited with the administrators today to let them know. To be honest, they made a valiant effort to influence my choice, but I was set on this one,” Rooney stated in a statement.

Rooney, 36, joined Derby County in the 2020/201 season, following the sack of Phillip Cocu.

The former Manchester United striker’s resignation comes the same day that property developer, David Clowes, announced a bid to take over the club after buying Derby’s Pride Park Stadium.
