Brighton’s transfer mastery broke Premier League profit record

BRIGHTON & HOVE, England – As many clubs are finding it difficult to adhere to the Premier League’s financial regulations, Brighton & Hove Albion started the month with the announcement of the largest annual profit in the division’s history. Their £122.8 million post-tax gain for the year ending June 30, 2023, came in the midst of an unprecedented success on the field as well, as the Seagulls made history by qualifying for Europe for the first time in their 123-year history with a sixth-place finish and an FA Cup semifinal appearance.

Figures reveal Brighton achieved all this with the 13th-highest wage outlay and the 17th-most costly squad. Progress continued this season as Roberto De Zerbi’s side finished top of their Europa League group — featuring victories home and away against European heavyweights Ajax — but a round-of-16 defeat to Roma preceded a late-season Premier League slump which leaves them in danger of missing out on a top-10 finish

In the Premier League, making money is uncommon. It remains to be seen how long Brighton can continue to defy the trend as they close out their season against three teams that suffered significant losses in the same time frame: Newcastle United (£73 million), Chelsea (£90 million), and Manchester United (£42.1 million).

So, how did they arrive at that historic number, and can their strategy be truly sustained? In order to learn more, ESPN spoke with a number of senior members of the south coast club.

Spurs broke the record for England’s highest profit in a single year in 2017–18, reporting a £113 million profit. Brighton’s tale is very different from Spurs’, who could point to a huge boost in commercial revenues, greater matchday returns from playing at Wembley while their new stadium was being built, and higher Champions League income from making it to the knockout stages.
