Mark Robins: Southampton officially appoint Coventry city head coach as Russell Martin departure confirmed
After finishing 15th in his first season at the club, Russell Martin guided Swansea to 10th place in the Championship;
Ruben Selles’ contract will not be renewed at the end of the current campaign; Southampton’s 11-year Premier League tenure came to an end when they placed last.
As it is announced that current manager Ruben Selles would be leaving Southampton at the end of the season,
Russell Martin has verbally agreed to take over as manager.Swansea and Southampton continue to negotiate over pay,
Selles had previously declared that he would leave Southampton if he was not the team’s permanent manager.
The club officially announced his departure on Wednesday and revealed that his contract will not be extended.
An addition was made. “The club would like to officially thank Ruben for taking over as manager
during a challenging period for the team and for his unwavering commitment to our efforts to maintain our Premier League status.
“”On Sunday at St Mary’s, in the last match against Liverpool, Ruben will be in control of the team. We want the best for him in his further endeavors.
“Martin, who is anticipated to succeed him, only has a year left on his Swansea contract.
He canceled a scheduled trip to the US to talk with the club’s American owners about extending his term.
Enzo Maresca, the assistant manager of Manchester City, was also vying for the Southampton position with Martin,
but he has now pulled out, citing his desire to continue working under Pep Guardiola for another season.
