Ipswich Town set to pocket over £600 million over promotion to the English Premier League

The Blues Premier League promotion may bring in half a billion pounds, according to a local business leader.

Following Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Huddersfield, the Blues will be promoted to the top tier for the first time in 22 years.

Terry Baxter, who represents local firms in the Ipswich Central Business Improvement District, predicts “massive” financial and emotional benefits.

“You can’t understate how important promotion to the Premier League is, not only for the club, but more importantly for the town,” he remarked.

“We’re talking about anywhere between £500 and £600 million worth of economic impact to the area, which is enormous for a town like Ipswich.

“More people are coming in, sleeping in hotels, and dining at restaurants. It makes a huge impact.

He went on to say, “I sat on the waterfront right after the game, and all I saw was a sea of smiles.”

Ipswich fans invade the pitch at Portman Road after their club secured promotion to the Premier League.

“People were feeling very positive, which is not always the case in Ipswich.” So having something to rally around,

a focal point for celebrating victory, is really essential to us, and Ipswich certainly provided that.”

Since Saturday, fans have invaded the ground at Portman Road, causing massive celebrations.

On Bank Holiday Monday, thousands came in town for an open-top bus parade and heroes’ celebration.

Big screens were also installed in Christchurch Park to allow everyone to enjoy  the celebrations.

On Saturday, the Blues went above and above,

earning three Championship points when they only needed one to secure promotion back to the Premier League.

The last time they were in the top flight was 2002.

They have gained back-to-back promotions, having advanced from League One previous season.

Ipswich were knocked out of the FA Cup by League Two side Barrow just two seasons ago,

prompting veteran Terry Butcher to lament that his previous team was “not a big club any more”.

Kieran McKenna took over as manager the day following the cup exit and has since propelled the Blues’ form to rival the most successful teams in the country.

By September 2023, no team in England’s top four divisions had won more league points than Ipswich since McKenna’s debut in charge in December 2021.

Their promotion from League One last season resulted in over 100 goals,

and McKenna elected not to make significant changes to his side for their return to the Championship.

That has made Ipswich’s stunning promotion charge all the more impressive,

as the Blues have scored almost 90 points, once again dominating the scoring charts.
