Billy Elliott was fired from his position as Sunderland manager on this day in 1979 because the board preferred a younger man to be in charge.

Having begun his career in 1942 with Bradford Park Avenue during the war. In 1951. Billy’s outstanding left-wing performances led to a transfer across the Pennines to Burnley. £23,000, but only after he’d made multiple requests for the relocation.

He earned five caps for England during his 74 league games with the Clarets. which he impressively scored three times. a considerably better percentage than the 14 in 74 of his club form.

We liked to splash the cash, and in June 1953 we spent £26,000 to get Billy under our left wing. A decision that sparked a lifetime romance with Sunderland.

Alongside fellow Bradfordians Shack, Trevor Ford, Tommy Wright, George Aitken, Stan Anderson, Billy Bingham, and Arthur Wright over the course of the following six years.

He scored 27 goals in 212 competitive games (including one into his own net), and the list goes on. In addition to glittering on the wing. His uncompromising demeanor made a deeper move to the left half appropriate.

A job at Park Avenue that he had occasionally had before moving even farther to the left in late 1956.

He played fewer often after our 1958 relegation, appearing just nine occasions and scoring his last goal. A penalty in September 10th’s 3-3 draw at Roker versus Sheff Wed.

We lost 6-0 at Hillsborough on the 17th following a 5-0 loss at Swansea during the week (there was no such thing as a computer algorithm back then). Billy’s eight-game stint at left back came to an end in those two games (Charlie Hurley’s first two).

Someone named Len Ashurst assumed control. Billy’s last match wearing the stripes was a 2-0 loss to Cardiff on December 21st. He relocated to Wisbech Town for a few seasons after the season ended.
