Hollywood actor Will Ferrell has joined the ranks of celebrities investing in the Championship club Leeds United.

Ferrell has apparently purchased a “significant” stake in the US-based 49ers Enterprises business, which owns the Elland Road side. The world-renowned actor has joined a group of investors in Leeds that includes Russell Crowe, Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps, and golfers Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas.

Spieth, a three-time major winner, disclosed last year that he and fellow American Thomas had purchased a minority stake in the former English champs. Ferrell, a co-owner of Major League Soccer club Los Angeles FC, professed his enthusiasm for English football during a visit to see Manchester City upset Aston Villa 3-1 last season, while also forging an odd relationship with England star Jack Grealish.

“Great to meet my new British friend Jack Grealish at the Etihad today,” Ferrell said. “He told me to buy Birmingham City and to get them relegated to League Two.”

Ferrell, who has an estimated net worth of more than $125 million (€116.5 million), rose to prominence through appearances on the comedic sketch show Saturday Night Live and later achieved acclaim for roles in blockbuster films such as Elf and Anchorman.

A source told English daily The Sun, “The 49ers will be announcing Will’s involvement in the coming days, and he’s looking forward to sprinkling a little stardust on the club.”He enjoys soccer and has been particularly taken by the intensity of the English game. His goal now is to get Leeds back to where they belong: the Premier League. Will and the 49ers see this as a real investment opportunity.

Leeds’ dreams of automatic promotion to the Premier League were shattered on the final day of the Championship season, as Ipswich defeated Huddersfield 2-0 on Saturday. After losing 2-1 to Southampton on Saturday, Daniel Farke’s club will try to restore their status in the top-flight through the
