Shocking:Former Chiefs Tight End Says Goodbye to Football
Matt Bushman, a former tight end for the Chiefs who played for Kansas City for the previous two years and won
two Super Bowl rings, recently announced he was leaving football.
During an appearance on the BYU athletics podcast The Y’s Guys, Bushman disclosed that he is proceeding with
the belief that his NFL career is coming to an end. Despite his statement that he would be willing to join a team,
he is making preparations for the next stage of his life.
Before signing with the Chiefs, the former BYU standout started his career with the Raiders as an undrafted free
agent.

Former TE Matt Bushman of the Chiefs Leaving Football Behind
In the audio available at this link, Bushman considers his playing career and gradually comes to terms with the
possibility of playing in the NFL. In just three seasons at BYU, he amassed 1,719 receiving yards, solidifying his
status as one of the team’s best tight ends ever.
Despite getting little playing time, he remains appreciative of his time with the Chiefs. This season, he did make
one appearance and received seven snaps. “This isn’t a retirement announcement, but I’m taking those steps to
move on,” stated Bushman in no uncertain terms.
Bushman declared that, should the proper opportunity present itself, he would “take it.” However, after Kansas
City decided not to re-sign him, he thought it was time to move on and step away from football.
It is difficult to see Bushman returning to the Chiefs with Travis Kelce, Noah Gray, Irv Smith Jr., and incoming
rookie Jared Wiley all ahead of him on the depth chart. He might get called up later by another team, but he will
always be remembered as a two-time champion.
