McKenna is expected to return to Old Trafford next season, having led Ipswich Town to Premier League promotion.

McKenna left Manchester United’s coaching staff in December 2021 to become manager of the Tractor Boys. Ipswich were 12th in League One at the time of his appointment, and he has since led the team to consecutive promotions.

On Saturday, Ipswich needed just one point to secure automatic promotion from the Championship. The East Anglian club defeated Huddersfield Town 2-0 at Portman Road, with goals from Wes Burns and Omari Hutchinson, securing promotion to the Premier League.

With the win, Ipswich will join Leicester City and United in the top flight next season. The Championship play-offs begin this month, with Leeds United, Southampton, West Bromwich Albion, and Norwich City competing for the last promotion berth.

All eyes will be on the Premier League schedule announcement next month, which will reveal when United will face Ipswich,

both at home and away. McKenna is likely to return to Old Trafford for the first time since leaving United.

McKenna was a member of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s coaching team at United before joining Ipswich.

The 37-year-old joined Old Trafford as part of Jose Mourinho’s backroom team before being retained when Solskjaer was promoted.

United are still struggling for success in the Premier League and elsewhere this season.

The Reds face Manchester City in the FA Cup final later this month, with Erik ten Hag aiming for his second major prize as manager.

Ten Hag’s squad is sixth in the Premier League league and will face Crystal Palace on Monday night.

United have only four more top-flight games to try to secure European qualifying, with the Champions League now officially out of reach.
