Sheffield United will have to play Championship football in 2024–25, but they can aim to drag Nottingham

Forest down with them on Saturday afternoon.

The Blades’ Premier League relegation was confirmed by a 5-1 thumping at the hands of Newcastle United,

while Nuno Espirito Santo‘s team is in the clear following a 2-0 loss to Manchester City.

In order to have any hope of making a spectacular comeback, Sheffield United needed to scare the Magpies

supporters last Saturday with a header in the fifth minute from Anel Ahmedhodzic, and they had Eddie Howe’s

team in trouble early on. Sheffield United played at St. James’ Park against European outsiders Newcastle.

Fans of the Blades may have wondered where that spirit of perseverance had disappeared during the season,

but Chris Wilder’s team lost a few excellent opportunities to increase their lead and were forced to pay a heavy

price for pushing the black and white bear.

The Blades were relegated to the second division with a resounding victory thanks to goals from Alexander Isak

(twice), Callum Wilson, Bruno Guimaraes, and an own goal from Ben Osborn. This was the Blades’ ninth

relegation from the English Premier League, the same number as their fierce rivals Sheffield Wednesday.

Although Wilder’s team is currently eight points behind Burnley and nine below Luton Town,

they are not yet relegated to a 20th-place finish.

The ultimate goal for Sheffield United, though, will be to avoid a bad piece of Premier League history.

With 97 goals conceded so far this season, they are just four goals short of shattering the record established by

the Swindon Town team of 1993–94, who allowed 100 goals in 42 games.

Sheffield United has conceded at least four goals in each of its last three Premier League games under Wilder’s

leadership. As a result, if the Blades are to stay afloat in the top division, Nottingham Forest, their opponents on

Saturday, must use every effort to expose these weaknesses.

The Tricky Trees are just one point above Luton Town in 17th place after suffering their third defeat in their last

four Premier League games. Although they have a stronger goal differential to their advantage, a victory over

Everton on Friday night would send them into the relegation zone.

Nottingham Forest has conceded multiple goals in each of their last four games against Sheffield United, a team

whose defensive shortcomings are well-documented. The Foresters are yet to win in the Premier League away

from home since defeating Newcastle on Boxing Day, and they are still waiting for their first away victory in

2024.
