On Thursday, the FA made their final verdict on Sandro Tonali.

The Newcastle United player continued to gamble on football matches after relocating to England earlier this season.

Sandro Tonali had already received a ten-month ban for betting on football matches while playing in Italy.

Yesterday’s verdict resulted in a suspended two-month penalty for the player, which will only take effect if he violates the betting rules again. The FA also provided information (see below) on the bets Sandro Tonali placed on Newcastle United matches.

Sandro Tonali will be available to play from August 27, 2024 onward.

Eddie Howe has now provided additional information about the player and what happened following the Italian FA’s original investigation and penalty.

Sandro Tonali has received a two-month suspended ban.

So, Sandro Tonali’s extra two months will not be activated unless he commits another breach, with the midfielder slated to return on August 27, 2024.

First, the FA admitted that they could discover no evidence that Sandro Tonali had placed any football bets.

Second, the only reason The FA could take action was because Sandro Tonali himself revealed that he had placed bets on football after signing with Newcastle United.

Third, the player revealed that he had made up to 50 bets.

Fourth, up to four of those were for Newcastle United games.

Fifth, all of the NUFC bets were for Newcastle to win.

Sixth, he couldn’t recall how much each of the bets was worth, but none of them over €10,000 (about £8,500).

Seventh, one of the four (at most) bets Sandro Tonali placed was on Newcastle United to beat Manchester City! In September, I won a wager on the League Cup game.

14. The FA contacted six regulated betting companies listed in ‘Exhibit 6 – Device Data’ to confirm if any of their accounts violated the FA’s betting rules.
15. All six operators stated there were no violations of The FA’s rules in the related accounts.

17. ST was interviewed by FA investigators on March 5, 2024.
18. The FA relies on ST’s confessions from his witness statement and discussion with investigators.
19. From August 12 to early October 2023, ST placed 40-50 football bets, including up to four on NUFC.
20. The four NUFC bets were all on NUFC to win, and they are summarized below:
i. An accumulator bet on NUFC beating Brighton & Hove Albion FC on September 2nd or Burnley FC on September 30th, 2023; ii. An accumulator bet that includes NUFC.
