Alex Murphy, a Newcastle United teenager, is aiming for more first-team minutes in the last month of the season.

The Republic of Ireland youth international came on as a late substitute in last weekend’s 5-1 home victory over Sheffield United.

It followed his debut against Chelsea in November.

Due to an unusual incidence of injuries this season, the 19-year-old has been named to 17 matchday squads,

and this number is certain to rise with four games remaining.

United are currently without three central defenders, with Fabian Schar joining Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles,

who have both been ruled out until late 2024 due to ACL injuries.

Emil Krafth and Dan Burn are scheduled to start for Burnley on Saturday, but Murphy is on standby.

Murphy impressed for the Magpies in preseason, playing in the Premier League Summer Series in the United States and the Sela Cup.

As a result, he began training regularly with Howe’s squad.

Howe stated, “Alex has been impressive in training. I’ve been quite delighted with him,

and he’s been with us for nearly the entire season. He’s evolved and developed into a pretty solid defender,

very comfortable on the ball, and a brief cameo last week that will have really good for him.

“Of course, with Fabian’s injury, he may have an opportunity to join the lineup among players like Paul Dummett.

We still have some excellent guys eager to participate.

“He’s versatile and can play any position on the left side.” However, given Fabian’s injury,

he would most likely be the one to shift to the right as well.

Murphy joined from League of Ireland club Galway United in July 2022 for an unknown amount.

Howe believes it was a “really good deal” for the club, which hopes to obtain more contracts like Murphy’s.

He went on to say: “If we can sign young players and develop them,

Alex has come to the club recently for a really good deal for us –

if we can develop players like him that’s part of the transfer strategy we need to use.”
