Report: Newcastle’s preseason plans shaping up

To few people’s surprise, Newcastle United is apparently planning a pre-season trip of East Asia,

with Japan appearing as the most likely destination rather than other lesser-known countries or ridiculous (operationally) continents.

The stated intentions include two friendly matches against J-League teams, including the Urawa Red Diamonds and Yokohama F Marinos.

Neither of those two clubs, nor any members of NUFC’s management, have confirmed the tour.

The decision to chose Japan intends to (unsurprisingly) raise commercial income and strengthen Newcastle’s global profile,

bolstering their coffers and allowing them to enter the market with more room to operate and bolster their team for the upcoming season and beyond.

This is comparable to the club’s forthcoming post-season tour to Australia at the end of the Premier League season,

where they will meet Tottenham Hotspur and an A-League All-Stars XI in Melbourne a few days after the national campaign concludes.

The benefits of such excursions in terms of football are questionable.

Eddie Howe has already expressed dissatisfaction with the gruelling travel and intense schedule of pre-season tours,

which were blamed for last year’s injury-plagued season. Despite this, financial incentives appear to be a driving force,

as they often are in these situations, with NUFC expecting to earn almost £3 million from the Australia trip alone.

According to several sources, some players and staff are dissatisfied with the heavy travel plans.

The club is also considering other options, such as a training camp in Germany, which would be far more doable for everyone.
