Sandro Tonali has received a two-month suspended ban for violating Football Association betting rules.

The Newcastle midfielder is presently serving a ten-month suspension after being found guilty of violating betting regulations by the Italian Football Federation.

He hasn’t played since October and won’t be eligible to return until August 27.

The FA’s complaint pertains to bets placed following Tonali’s arrival to Newcastle from AC Milan this summer,

with the 23-year-old stating that he placed “40 to 50” bets between August and October 2023.

“Up to four” of those were on Newcastle to win, including matches against Brentford, Manchester City,

and West Ham, and Tonali participated in three of the matches he gambled on.

Tonali has been fined £20,000 and warned by the FA about his future conduct.

Tonali will not have to serve the penalty during the 2024/25 campaign as long as he does not commit any other violations during that time.

When his punishment from the Italian Football Federation expires, he will be able to return to the pitch.

“Sandro is continuing to follow a therapeutic plan and educational programme with the club’s full support and will continue to train with his team-mates,” the club stated in a statement.

An independent Regulatory Commission stated that “[Tonali] self-reported the breaches at the earliest feasible moment (on October 20, 2023),

and has willingly supplied all of the key information that The FA intends to rely on.

“Without ST’s proactive help in this instance, the FA would not have a case. This is an important part of this case.”

Referring to Tonali’s existing punishment, the commission stated: “[Tonali] has thus already served / will likely have done so by the time a hearing is scheduled, the maximum amount of time prescribed by The FA Betting Rules.”

“It would be unfair, unjust and not within the interests of the wider game to impose upon [Tonali] a further ban when he has already served a considerable amount of time and has provided an extraordinary level of cooperation to The FA.”
