Julen Lopetegui’s future may have become clearer this morning following an important development.

The Spaniard, a former manager of Porto, Sevilla, Real Madrid, and Wolverhampton Wanderers,

has been out of job since leaving the Midlands-based club,

reportedly due to an argument over the amount of money available for transfers.

Lopetegui has pedigree, having also managed the Spanish national team,

so it’s unlikely that he’ll be out of employment for long.

Julen Lopetegui joining West Ham?

Both AC Milan and West Ham United were speculated to be prospective new employment destinations,

with the 57-year-old preferring a move to the Serie A giants over the Hammers.

That option, however, appears to be no longer available to him.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport (h/t Fichajes), Milan has rejected his candidature and is looking into other options.

According to The Guardian (subscription required), the Milan hierarchy’s reluctance to select Lopetegui is due to objections from a segment of the club’s supporters.

The same could be said for West Ham fans, who believed they were on the verge of hiring Ruben Amorim,

a highly respected Sporting manager.

Five of Lopetegui’s managerial roles have lasted 20 games or less,

with his most successful spell at Sevilla (170 games), according to transfermarkt.

A lack of longevity outside from his time in Andalusia may raise concerns among the East London faithful.

He does, however, prefer to play in an offensive 4-3-3 shape,

which would be manna from heaven for a fan base accustomed to David Moyes‘ lukewarm, safety-first attitude.

With Milan out of the picture, a move to West Ham appears the most likely possibility, and time will tell if that ends up being the case.
