FLW’s verdict on whether Jamal Lowe could be a good replacement for Josh Sargent at Norwich City

According to reports, Norwich City will compete to sign Jamal Lowe this summer.

The 29-year-old is reportedly drawing interest from many Championship teams,

according to TBR Football. The forward from AFC Bournemouth, who has been on loan at Swansea City,

has also been linked to Ipswich Town and Middlesbrough.

Since Lowe’s contract expires at the end of the current campaign,

he will have the freedom to negotiate terms with other teams.

In 34 Championship games this season, Lowe has netted nine

goals and provided three assists for the Swans (statistics courtesy of Fbref).

Lowe’s signing may be contingent on Adam Idah’s future just as much as it is on Sargent’s.

It wouldn’t be the most exciting signing ever to replace the US international.

Given Sargent’s significance to David Wagner’s team, Norwich would need to find a replacement for him in addition to Lowe.

Despite having a strong season in an unimpressive Swansea team,

29-year-old Lowe has only scored more than ten goals in the Championship once in his career—three years ago.

Supporters would be far more interested in signing him if he was taking Idah’s place,

who is now thriving on loan at Celtic.

This would indicate that Lowe would be added to the squad as a reserve player

and would face competition from Ashley Barnes for playing time, providing a better counterbalance to their offensive options.

This would be a relatively low-risk signing for a free agent; if the Canaries are able to turn a profit on Idah,

they may choose to use that money for other investments.

If Norwich are able to secure a spot in the Premier League,

it’s unlikely that they will pursue a deal for the former Portsmouth forward because the

Jamaican international would find the level of competition too great.

To be honest, I don’t think Jamal Lowe is a suitable substitute for Josh Sargent.

Although they both have similar skill sets and both play as central strikers,

I believe Norwich City is more interested in Lowe’s ability to complement their attacking line than in replacing Sargent.

The 29-year-old isn’t as much of a natural finisher as the American number nine,

but he does have pace and the ability to make very deft runs in behind.

If Adam Idah were to sign a permanent contract with Celtic,

he would be a better fit to play alongside Sargent in the side.

Bringing him in on a free transfer would be a really smart move,

and if the Canaries can defeat rival Ipswich Town, it would probably

be a pleasing one if they make the Championship squad the following season.

The Championship appears to be his level,

Lowe is a forward from Bournemouth and is not a straight replacement for Sargent,

even if there are many reasons for Norwich to be interested in him should he go.
