A huge update on Sunderland’s search for a new manager has been issued, with an appointment expected very soon.

Since Tony Mowbray was fired in December, Sunderland’s manager-fan connection has appeared to be exceedingly tense. The team has had a very difficult season.

The choice to replace him with Michael Beale infuriated his supporters, and when he won four of his twelve games in command, it proved to be the right one.

Although the Sunderland supporters enjoyed Mike Dodds’ first term in charge, he hasn’t been able to turn around the team’s performance at all, and as a result, everyone is eager for the season to conclude.

Since Dodds’ temporary appointment, the topic of discussion among all parties involved has been who will be in charge this summer.

Though Kyril Louis-Dreyfus and Kristjaan Speakman will have months to identify a suitable replacement, it doesn’t seem like much progress has been made in completing the necessary procedures to choose someone in the upcoming weeks.

Sunderland could have a new head coach in the coming weeks

The Northern Echo has now revealed, though, that the club plans to schedule a meeting for the “immediate aftermath” of this weekend’s game against Sheffield Wednesday.

According to the article, the club has been “firming up their plans” over the last several weeks and is now “confident” that they will be able to move quickly after the campaign ends.

It appears that the list of candidates may have been reduced to just three coaches after several names surfaced in recent months.

Rene Maric, the manager of Bayern Munich U19s, has been linked to Wearside in German reports, and it is now thought that Sunderland and the Bundesliga team have made “contact.”

The 31-year-old was appointed head coach of Bayern’s U19 team just two months ago, having previously worked as an assistant manager for RB Salzburg, Borussia Monchengladbach, Borussia Dortmund, and Leeds United.

According to the article, Paul Heckingbottom, who has been unemployed since being fired by Sheffield United in December, is still being considered by Sunderland.

Danny Rohl, who has the potential to keep Sheffield Wednesday in the hunt if they can win this week on Wearside, is also still on the shortlist.

Who would be the best choice for the Black Cats?

Rene Maric is a very new appointment, and not much is known about him, but he seems like a highly interesting choice, especially given Rohl’s success at Hillsborough.

Before accepting his first position in senior management in October, Rohl previously had stints with Bayern Munich, RB Leipzig, and the German national team. In these roles, he has been extremely successful.

Maric might decide to follow in his footsteps, but Rohl looks like an even better choice, one that might be harder to pass up—especially if Wednesday stays up.

Heckingbottom seems like the safer choice, but if he was always intended to be our primary objective, his entrance would be a bit odd as we could have chosen him back when we fired Michael Beale.

If the club wants to make amends for its faults, this appointment must be made correctly, and all three of those choices give me far more promise than Beale did.
