Leicester seal Championship title with thumping win and break Man City record

The Foxes sealed the Championship title with a 3-0 victory over Preston North End on Monday night.

The Foxes’ spot in the top division was guaranteed last Friday when Leeds lost to QPR,

and the club knew that a win would secure the Championship, which they did with ease.

Vardy took his goal tally to the season to 20 with his double which helped seal Leicester their title

Club legend Jamie Vardy scored twice before Kasey McAteer finished from close range to cap off a stress-free evening in what has been an extremely trying season for Leicester.

The 2015/16 Premier League champions were charged with an alleged violation of Profit and Sustainability Rules,

and while they avoided an immediate points loss, there is concern that they will incur one upon their return to the top flight.

The Leicester party is about to begin

But right now, Enzo Maresca’s players will be ecstatic to be back in the Premier League for the first time since their relegation last season.

The result leaves Leicester seven points clear at the top of the Championship,

with Leeds and Ipswich tied on 90 points with only one and two games remaining in the season, respectively.

This is Leicester’s ninth second-tier league title, putting them ahead of Manchester City.

Following the triumph, Leicester hero Vardy told Sky Sports: “Unbelievable; we knew it would be a tough game.

“We completed the job in a very professional manner. You can see the fans’ celebrations, which is fantastic.”

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall added: “We’ve been anticipating this moment all season.

You can see the crowd, and they deserve this moment after a tough season.

“They’ve been here home and away and I’m just so happy we can give them a night like this.”

Leicester's title glory has now been sealed

Leicester were overwhelming favourites to secure an immediate return to the Premier League given their squad’s strength and experience.

At one point, it appeared that they would glide to the crown, but a run of poor form left it far from inevitable.

Despite pressure from Ipswich and Leeds, Leicester returned to winning ways and can now celebrate their latest victory.

On Saturday, the Foxes visit Blackburn Rovers at the King Power Stadium in the Championship season’s last game.

It will provide them the opportunity to win the Championship title in front of their fans before their return to the top division.
