When asked about speculation connecting him to Sunderland, Queens Park Rangers manager Marti Cifuentes responded bluntly with 17 words.

Sunderland are looking for a replacement for Michael Beale, who was fired last January after only 13 games in charge at the Academy of Light after succeeding Tony Mowbray.

Mike Dodds was appointed on an interim basis following Beale’s firing, with Sunderland set to hire a new manager at the end of the season. Last week, however, Cifuentes’ name rose to the top of the betting field to become Sunderland’s new head coach, with several outlets declaring him the new favourite.

However, when asked about the potential after his QPR side crushed Leeds United at Loftus Road in the Championship last week,

the Spaniard denied the link.

“If you believe everything you see on social media then it’s going to be a long night,” he said.

“Goal achieved. That was the important point. Second, it was a terrific evening – a fantastic way to close the circle,”

he says after QPR avoided relegation with an excellent win over promotion-chasing Leeds United.

“I was confident that we could make the epic escape. I knew those guys had more in them,

and I believe they shown that not only tonight,

but also in difficult circumstances. We succeeded, but we did so in a specific way, which is significant.

It was about hard effort and honesty. “Now is the time to keep pushing,” he said.
