Premier League makes official judgment about Newcastle United following Everton’s U-turn

The Premier League match referees for Saturday’s (3pm kickoff) Newcastle United vs. Sheffield United match at St. James’ Park have been confirmed.

This month, Tony Harrington will officiate a home game for Newcastle.

When Harrington was last in command, he overturned his first ruling and gave the visitors a late penalty after a VAR check in the 1-1 draw against Everton.

To save a point for Everton, Dominic Calvert-Lewin stepped up and scored from the penalty spot.

Harrington was the video assistant referee for Manchester City’s 5-1 victory over Fulham, and he was engaged in one of the biggest refereeing mistakes of the season.

Man City took the lead at 1-1 after a header from Nathan Ake was approved despite Manuel Akanji being offside when the ball entered the goal.

Despite admissions from PGMOL chief Howard Webb and Manchester City players that the goal should have been overruled, Harrington on VAR chose not to intervene at all, and the goal was allowed to stand.

Erling Haaland, a striker for City, said he felt the goal was offside and that if he were a Fulham player, he would be “fuming.”

Eddie Smart, Sian Massey-Ellis, and Robert Jones will support Harrington as the fourth official.

Ian Hussin and Andy Madley will work together as the match’s video assistance referees.

Newcastle is hoping to recover from their 2-0 loss to Crystal Palace on Wednesday when they play.

If Sheffield United, who are now at the bottom of the standings, loses on Saturday, the Magpies, who are currently ranked seventh, would be demoted.
