John O’Shea appointed Southampton manager until end of season

For two more games, John O’Shea will continue to lead the Republic of Ireland as their temporary head coach.
The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) has been searching for Stephen Kenny’s long-term replacement.

This resulted in legendary member of the national team O’Shea temporarily seizing the captaincy for the March friendly international matches against Belgium and Switzerland.

In his first game, O’Shea impressed, earning a goalless draw in Dublin against a depleted Belgium team.

The former Manchester United player would later manage a 1-0 loss to Switzerland,

with a free kick from Xherdan Shaqiri turning out to be the game’s deciding factor.

At the time, it was anticipated that a full-time head coach would be in charge for the matches in June against Portugal and Hungary,

two additional countries who had earned spots in the 2024 European Championship.

Rather, O’Shea, who has expressed in the past that he wishes to continue in the position, will be staying longer.

What is the opinion of O’Shea?
“I’m looking forward to continuing as interim head coach for two great games in June against Hungary and Portugal,

” O’Shea stated in a statement posted on the FAI’s official website.

“Both games present significant challenges, but I was really pleased with the performances I saw from the players in both of the March games.

In June, we hope to build on some of those positives while also winning the game that I felt the team deserved.”

It is always an honor to represent your country, so I’m thrilled to continue as interim head coach for June

. The work will get started right away. “I’ve been in contact with Marc Canham (director of football) since the March fixtures,

and last week, he asked me about stepping in again.

“Also, great to confirm the coaching and performance team will remain for the June fixtures which is great for continuity with the players and staff.”

Next is the UEFA Nations League.
In anticipation of the forthcoming UEFA Nations League, Republic of Ireland will use the next doubleheader as practice.
