Confirmed: Benfica accept Celtic €3.5M bid to sign Paulo Bernardo on a permanent basis

The midfielder has spent the season on loan with Celtic from his parent club Benfica.

The agreement between the teams does include a clause stating that a £6 million bid would be sufficient to secure the permanent transfer of the Portuguese Under-21 international.

While Celtic have the option to buy the offensive midfielder, one of his previous coaches has claimed that he would like to lure Bernardo to Mexico.

Renato Paiva, the former Benfica academy coach and B team manager, has spoken with A Bola about reconciling with any of his ex-players.

Bernardo is one of the candidates the Toluca manager is considering.

He replied, “I had my sights on Paulo Bernardo. However, at the time, this was not possible.

He did not want to depart for South America. I kept an eye on him and whether Benfica wanted to release him.

“I sit on the sofa and watch him play at the highest level;

knowing that I contributed in some small way makes me very happy.” If the occasion arises, I would like to reconnect.”

Meanwhile, Chris Sutton believes Brendan Rodgers’ handling of Daizen Maeda’s injury return may be a double deception.

The Celtic hero has expressed doubts about whether the 26-year-old Japanese forward is truly ready to return to first-team action,

only weeks after being anticipated to be sidelined for the rest of the season.

The analyst has emphasised the importance of winning both the physiological struggle and the fight on the pitch during the title match against the Rangers.

And, with Maeda’s presence having the potential to cause James Tavernier some sleepless nights,

Sutton believes it may all be hearsay from the Hoops coach.
