Ally McCoist pinpoints 2 Celtic title threats as Rangers legend challenges ‘erratic’ champions to run top six gauntlet

McCoist has not ruled out Celtic’s “erratic” form returning and giving Rangers a legitimate shout at the crown.

Defeat at Ross County and a draw against Dundee have shifted the lead back to the east end of Glasgow, with Brendan Rodgers‘ side three points ahead after playing the same amount of games as their opponents. The final Old Firm duel of the season takes place on May 11 at Celtic Park, with no away fans present, and Philippe Clement’s side must win as things stand if they are to finish first in the Premiership.

However, McCoist reminded everyone that the reigning champs had just dropped surprising points. And, with the Hoops due to face the country’s five next best sides, the Ibrox icon believes it is far from certain that Celtic will win all five points, especially with games against Kilmarnock and Hearts coming up – the only two teams to beat them domestically this season.

“I genuinely do [think Rangers can win the title],” McCoist told Football Fancast. “Make no mistake, they are the second favourites. But you look at it. Celtic’s form had been quite unpredictable until recently. Dropping points in unexpected areas, and it’s already heading to the  stage where it’s against the top six.

“So, the big question is: Can Rangers win at Celtic Park?” Indeed, they are. Would it be extremely difficult? Yes, it would be extremely difficult, but they are capable of executing it. Can Celtic drop more points? You’d better believe it. Kilmarnock has snatched a lot of points from Celtic this season, as well as from Rangers. Celtic have dropped points to Hearts.

“So, is the Rangers dream still alive? You best believe it is still alive. They had the favourites tag about three weeks ago; they’ve lost it, for sure, but it’s not beyond them.”
