Philippe Clement may be forced to reshuffle his Rangers backroom staff following news that

first-team coach Alex Rae has been suggested as a possible replacement for Michael Beale at Sunderland.

The EFL Championship club, which is presently 13th in the table following a rollercoaster season,

fired former Gers manager Beale in February,

with Mike Dodds taking over interim duties as the Black Cats look for a permanent replacement.

Several names have been suggested by pundits in recent weeks, with the ongoing management instability at the Stadium of Light,

and Rae’s connection to Rangers is thought to have piqued the interest of club executives.

The 54-year-old has not been an independent manager since leaving St Mirren in 2016,

but has been heavily involved in the Gers coaching set-up in recent years.

Following Beale’s sacking from Ibrox in October, he took over as interim manager alongside Steven Davis,

and his Belgian replacement Clement was eager to keep a Scotsman on his new backroom team.

Rae, who played for Sunderland from 1996 to 2001, has also managed Dundee and worked as Paul Ince’s assistant at MK Dons,

Blackpool, and Reading. As a result, many people south of the border continue to remember him.

Former England international Michael Grey stated on talkSPORT that Rae’s name was mentioned in relation to the role.

Grey stated, “The season has just not been good at all.”

I believe they (Sunderland) had gotten everyone back on board with Tony Mowbray,

which had been a problem for them.

When he went and they tried to bring in the appropriate people,

Michael Beale didn’t work out; I believe you’ll know a little about him, Coisty.

“It just didn’t work out for him; he wasn’t the right fit – Mike Dodds is in there until the end of the season.”

But I’ll tell you who got mentioned the other day: Alex Rae.who is working at Rangers right now.”

McCoist added: “He was with Paul Ince down at Reading as well,

so you’re correct in saying he’s in with Philippe Clement at Rangers right now.” I agree with you;

Sunderland should look for a fresh, youthful, creative – preferably British – coach who can take over the club and move it forward.”
