Marc van Bommel may be poised to offer West Ham United a significant advantage in their pursuit of Julen Lopetegui by gaining the lead in the fight for the position at AC Milan.

Foot Mercato reports that the Rossoneri are considering Van Bommel as a replacement for Stefano Pioli.

They explain that the Italian club is preparing for life after Pioli,

with this season guaranteed to be trophy-free and a growing belief that they need to replace managers.

Pioli has been under fire for several months, and the last two weeks,

in which they have seen Inter win the title and be knocked out of Europe, appear to have put an end to his reign.

According to FM, Van Bommel is gaining a lot of points with those higher up at the club,

and some are considering making him the main target.

He’s been excelling with Royal Antwerp and even has Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s support,

who has been pushing the club to sign him.

If they do so, Lopetegui will not be travelling to Milan, potentially leaving West Ham free to sign him.

According to reports earlier today, West Ham are considering hiring the former Wolves manager to replace David Moyes.

They face stiff competition for the Spanish manager, and AC Milan was one of the contenders, with Lopetegui on their list.

He had apparently been waiting for the Milan position after leaving Wolves last year,

so the Italians would have had an advantage; however, if they go with Van Bommel,

West Ham could be his next best option.
