That was a major move involving two former Sunderland managers announced on Tuesday morning.

The League Managers Association has appointed Martin O’Neill, a former manager of Sunderland, as its next chairman.

At the end of the season, Howard Wilkinson announced he was ending his 33-year chairmanship,

and the 72-year-old took over for the other former Black Cats manager.

After initially signing a three-year contract in December 2011, O’Neill managed the Stadium of Light for 14 months.

His first game in charge was a 2-1 victory over Blackburn Rovers.Ex-Sunderland manager replaces former Leeds United boss in chairman role

Even before leaving in March 2013 after eight games without a win

that left the Black Cats dangerously near to the Premier League relegation zone,

the former Aston Villa manager managed noteworthy triumphs over teams like Arsenal and Liverpool.

After leaving Wearside, O’Neill managed Nottingham Forest and the Republic of Ireland.

He hasn’t been in the dugout since leaving Forest in the summer of 2019.

After Wilkinson decided to step aside, the former Northern Ireland international,

who has worked in the media for the past five years, will take on a new position as LMA chairman.

O’Neill declared, “I am incredibly proud to be voted the new LMA Chair by my fellow managers,”

following the announcement of his appointment. I am taking over for Howard Wilkinson,

who has managed the LMA’s expansion for more than 30 years and provided outstanding,

, and passionate service to its members.”I have much valued the assistance I have received from the LMA over my tenure as a manager,

and I am thrilled to be able to return some favor to the organization.

I am really excited to work with Richard Bevan and the group.

In an ideal world, I would like to carry on the hard work that Howard has started,

supporting both the present and upcoming LMA members.

“I am immensely honoured to have been the Chair of the LMA

and I am tremendously proud of the association that stands before us today –

we’ve come a long way in the last 30+ years,” Wilkinson said,

looking back on his tenure as Chair. When we first gathered at Elland Road to talk about the future all those years ago,

we had no idea how far the association would come.”From Grantham Town to the Euros,

Martin brings a wealth of diverse and invaluable experience to the role that gives him

a brilliant perspective on the challenges faced by the LMA membership.

” I was honoured to be named LMA Chair in 1992, and I have no doubt Martin will feel the same way.

I am forward to see how the LMA develops under Martin’s direction.
