Eddie Howe confirms two key Newcastle United stars will not play again this season

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has offered an injury update for two of his midfielders before of the encounter against Crystal Palace.

The Magpies return to Selhurst Park on Wednesday night, feeling refreshed after more than a week off.

They should be full of confidence following their amazing 4-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur.

However, Eddie Howe’s options will be limited by injuries as he prepares to face Crystal Palace with much the same group as against Spurs.

Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles will be absent due to ACL injuries that could keep them out for the rest of 2024.

And they are not the only Newcastle United players who will not play a single minute till the end of the 2023/24 Premier League season.

Eddie Howe delivers a devastating injury update on two Newcastle United players.

Eddie Howe has been speaking to the media before of Newcastle United’s match against Crystal Palace,

and has revealed the names of two players who have been ruled out for the remainder of the season due to injury.

The first is Joe Willock, who continues to struggle from an Achilles’ heel that has destroyed his entire campaign.

“We have decided that a period where he strengthens the area around his Achilles will benefit him more,” he went on to say.

“The long-term view was taken, and we will get him ready for next season.” Surgery would not be useful to him in this case.

It’s difficult for Joe, but perhaps we can get to the point where he can play freely next season.”

Bad news for Lewis Miley as well.

Howe has also spoken about Lewis Miley, who has missed the Magpies’ last four games due to a back issue.

“The decision was made on Lewis to protect him long-term,” he went on to say.

“We will not see Lewis again this season. Even if there was a chance, we took it away early due to his age;

we are only concerned with his long-term prospects.”

Newcastle United made a sensible decision.

While losing two more players to season-ending injuries is disappointing, the decision was justified.

The club is looking at the larger picture,

ensuring that Willock and Miley fully recover from their injuries and are ready for the 2024/25 season.

It is the correct call for both players. Willock has had a rough season and needs this time off to recover from his Achilles ailment.

And it will be merely rest; Howe has stated that the 24-year-old will not have surgery.

Miley, too, should proceed with caution. He is just 17 years old, and his body is still developing,

therefore pushing him to play through the pain and go the extra mile would be a huge mistake.

It could have a long term effect on his career, which is not what you want for a generational talent like him.

Despite his tremendous performance during Miley’s breakthrough year,

Howe is doing the right thing and protecting him.

It’s been amazing to see the youth shine in this Newcastle United squad,

especially against some of the big players he’s had to face.

Miley has always held his own, and it is apparent that he has a promising future at St James’ Park.

And that is one of the reasons why he will not play in our remaining six games; the danger is simply not worth it.
