5 current Cowboys whose fates will be determined by 2024 draft

5 current Cowboys whose fates will be determined by 2024 draft

Regarding the 2024 NFL Draft, the Dallas Cowboys have some clear needs, and their actions

over those few days in late April may reveal their thoughts on five of their present players.

The team may need to turn to some internal possibilities to make up for the players they lost

because it will be challenging to address all of their holes in the draft.

The Cowboys’ organisational philosophy for the past 12 years has been to have faith in players

stepping up, a sentiment that executive vice president Stephen Jones has discussed extensively

this offseason. Though it is their preferred method of adding players to the squad, the organisation

does not have enough draft cash to address all of the deficiencies in the lineup in one round.

The Cowboys may have to put more faith in these five guys because they will likely pass on a few

spots and allow progress to emerge from within.

Offensive lineman T.J. Bass

The Oregon free agent who went undrafted was given some faith by the Cowboys. The rookie

gained a spot on the roster and proceeded to start two games, one at each guard position.

Right guard Zack Martin was replaced by T.J. Bass at the start of Week 3, however Bass struggled

as a rookie. In Week 15’s loss to the Buffalo Bills, he also replaced Martin after Martin went down

early. In the match, Bass also encountered some difficulties against a top flight DL.

Interior OL Brock Hoffman

Two starts were given to Hoffman, a backup interior lineman, in the same games that Bass

started. Hoffman’s career consisted of just two starts, in Week 3 and Week 18, and like Bass,

he performed better against the Commanders.

Last season, Hoffman relieved starting centre Tyler Biadasz, who was released in free agency,

leaving the previously undrafted free agent as the team’s only experienced centre.

Wide receiver Jalen Tolbert

The Cowboys could really use another wide receiver to come up, even though it may not seem like one of their more urgent needs. Although Tolbert played well in his second season, the 2022 third-round pick needs to do better now that veteran wide receiver Michael Gallup isn’t there.

Defensive tackle Mazi Smith

Same story for the Cowboys defence in the new year. Once more, they must locate a defensive tackle who can stuff runs. Over the past five drafts, the team has allocated a significant amount of cash to the position with little success. Of the five defensive linemen selected in the first three rounds, only one, Osa Odighizuwa, has had any meaningful impact.

Cornerback Trevon Diggs

This is more related to Diggs’ injury than his skill level. Diggs, an All-Pro cornerback, and DaRon Bland, an All-Pro CB from last season, should form one of the league’s best tandems. However, Diggs will be recovering from an ACL injury that he sustained just a few weeks into the 2023 season.
