POINTS DEDUCTION: EFL finally confirms Leicester city’s points deduction,

which could be a great advantage for Ipswich, Leeds United, and Southampton.

The Premier League has verified that Leicester City would not be losing points this season. This was confirmed by the EFL.

Leicester was referred to an independent commission last month after

the Premier League accused them of violating its profit and sustainability regulations (PSR).

This season, these commissions have sanctioned point deductions for Nottingham Forest and Everton twice.

However, Leicester is currently a Championship team in the EFL after being demoted from

the Premier League at the end of the previous campaign.

Leicester launched “urgent legal proceedings” against the Premier League and the EFL in response to the accusation.

An application for an interim injunction to stop the EFL from punishing the team this season with a sports consequence,

such as a deduction of points, was one of the components of those proceedings.

However, the EFL stated on Friday that it does not have the authority to

implement any point deductions mandated by an independent Premier League panel, “having taken legal advice.”

Leicester’s request for an injunction “was neither necessary nor appropriate,”

according to the EFL, and it has been denied.

The independent panel to which Leicester has been referred may impose a points punishment,

and that penalty will carry over to the following season.

With five games left, Leicester leads the Championship,

although they are only one point clear of Leeds United and tied for second place with Ipswich Town,

who hold the final automatic promotion slot.

After filing its PSR calculation for the three-year reporting period ending this season,

Leicester was placed under an EFL registration embargo,

which prohibits them from signing new players or contracts with their present squad members.

Leicester might face an EFL sporting fine if it is determined that they

violated PSR throughout the last stretch of this season.

Sheffield United, a Premier League team,

will also start their next season in the Championship with two fewer points than they started.

The EFL announced that the South Yorkshire club was sanctioned because they “defaulted on a number of payments to other clubs” during the 2022–2023 season,

when they played in the second tier and were under the EFL’s jurisdiction.
