Ipswich Town: ‘Together as one we’ve got a great chance’ – Ashton on Town’s promotion push
Ipswich Town’s CEO, Mark Ashton, has urged the team’s supporters to lend a hand in helping the
team cross the finish line.
Mark Ashton claims he sensed he had discovered a man who could ‘carry the weight’ of managing Ipswich Town after meeting Kieran McKenna for the first time.
In December 2021, career coach McKenna accepted his first-ever senior management position when
he resigned from his position as Manchester United’s assistant manager to take Paul Cook’s place in
the dugout at Portman Road.
Thanks to an incredible league record of P112 W65 D33 L14, he has now transformed the Blues from
a mid-table League One team to a table-topping Championship team that is just three games away
from the Premier League.
Chief executive Mark Ashton told the EADT and Ipswich Star following the 37-year-old’s unexpected
win Championship Manager of the Year: “I said to Kieran tonight that it seems a long time ago that he and I met and we first talked about him joining this football club.” He has simply been amazing from
the beginning.
“This is a fantastic honour for him and the football team, regardless of what happens at the end of the season. I can’t be happier for him.”
In that first interview, which took place a few days prior to an ugly FA Cup loss at League Two club Barrow, Ashton was asked what he thought of McKenna. He replied, “My instinct was really strong
on his values.” The technical and tactical aspects of his football career were the subject of my studies,
thus there was no need for debate as his background was readily apparent.
