Having grown up primarily in southern Wisconsin, Romo was influenced by Green Bay

Packers quarterback Brett Favre, whose daring and aggressive style of play he eventually tried

to imitate. Despite being a strong player for Burlington (Wisconsin) High School, Romo attended Eastern Illinois University, a Division I-AA institution in Charleston, Illinois, because he was not

drafted by any of the big college football teams. He was the Ohio Valley Conference Player of

the Year three times (2000–02) while attending Eastern Illinois, and in his last year, he was

honoured with the Walter Payton Award as Division I–AA’s best offensive player with the

Walter Payton Award.

Romo went undrafted in the 2003 NFL draft despite being eligible. He signed an undrafted

free agent contract with the Dallas Cowboys later that year, although he saw limited playing time throughout his first three seasons. He didn’t become the starting quarterback until the middle of

the 2006 season, when he took over for an ageing Drew Bledsoe. Romo thrived in the starting job

almost immediately, assisting the Cowboys in earning a playoff wild-card spot. He rapidly became

a fan favourite due to his ability to improvise plays and his willingness to throw downfield. With

2,903 yards and 19 touchdowns passed, he concluded the season as the first quarterback chosen for

the Pro Bowl by the Cowboys since Troy Aikman in 1996.

Romo has played in 41 straight road games with a passing touchdown, which is an NFL record.

Loads of fans showered the star with warm wishes as he turns a year older today.
