Glasgow Rangers’ defence has struggled in recent games, allowing three goals against Celtic and Ross County before keeping a clean sheet against Dundee.

The only one who received pass marks was John Souttar, who has been impressive since joining the starting XI.

John Souttar’s season statistics

The defender joined on a free transfer when his contract with Hearts expired in 2022.

Despite a difficult rookie season that saw an ankle injury derail his progress, Souttar has returned beautifully this year.

The Scot is fourth among his teammates in the Premiership for accurate passes per game (59.3),

third for accurate long balls per game (4.3), second for interceptions per game (one),

and third for clearances per game (3.5), demonstrating how important a player he has become under Philippe Clement.

His greatest strength is his physicality, which allows him to consistently win one-on-one bouts.

Indeed, Souttar wins 5.9 duels per game in the top division, for a 72% success rate, making him a nuisance to opposing attackers.

At 27 years old, he is only entering his peak, with a current market worth of €2.50 million (£2.1 million),

and the Light Blues might make a significant profit on a player who cost them nothing less than two years ago.

Another new addition to the squad is Dujon Sterling, who signed on a free transfer but is currently worth more than Souttar.

Dujon Sterling’s market worth at Rangers

Michael Beale worked with Sterling while coaching at Chelsea, persuading him to sign a contract with the Ibrox club last summer.

The transfer cost Rangers nothing, which, like Souttar, could turn out to be a fantastic financial decision.

This season, the Englishman has played in six different places for the Gers,

showcasing his versatility and impressing wherever he is called upon.

Sterling, hailed as “powerful and athletic” by journalist Jonny McFarlane, has had a successful stay at the club,

appearing 30 times across all competitions and scoring his first senior goal against Benfica in the Europa League.

Sterling was used as a right winger in that encounter, and he performed excellently in the 2-2 tie.

His market value has risen to €3 million (£2.5 million) as a result of his recent performances,

and if he continues to demonstrate maturity well beyond his 24-year-old age, this amount will undoubtedly grow more in the future.

while recent dismal performances, Clement still has a few strong players who give their all while being let down by others,

most notably a few senior members of this current club.

If the Belgian can continue to develop both Souttar and Sterling next season,

he may well find himself with two precious assets who might make the Light Blues a fortune in the next 12 months.
