Goalie Nick Pope of Newcastle United may miss four months due to a shoulder injury he suffered on Saturday against Manchester United, according to manager Eddie Howe.

Pope has started every Premier League and Champions League game this season, but this injury will keep him out of the game for some time. Pope was forced off the field during Newcastle’s 1-0 triumph.

“He made a few appointments with experts. “We’re still awaiting official word on the situation,” Howe informed reporters. “We believe he will undergo surgery. About four months away, but it was something we anticipated right after the game.”

Howe dismissed rumors in the media that the team was trying to recruit David de Gea, a free agent who left Manchester United in July when his contract ended, and signed a Spanish goalkeeper.

“I’ve seen a lot of headlines in the media about players, including goalkeepers. We haven’t done any research. We would be recruiting in every section of the pitch if we were recruiting right now. The other keepers have an opportunity to solidify their positions,” Howe continued.

Pope’s absence will give Martin Dubravka his chance. The Slovakian goalie, who made his only appearance of the season against the same opponents in the League Cup, replaced Pope in the last minutes of Manchester United’s match.

“I’ve always thought highly of him. “There is no hesitation about bringing Martin into the team because he is a top-notch goalkeeper, a brilliant shot-blocker, and very good with his feet,” Howe stated.

“It has been a big effort from the group, the players have really grasped the situation we are in, they have really stood up,” stated the coach.

Howe was even more delighted with Newcastle’s performance after their back-to-back home league victories against Manchester United than he was after their 4-1 victory over Chelsea or their tie with Paris St. Germain.

“The Chelsea game gave us a lot of confidence; it was a huge win for us. That resulted in Paris, a difficult topic to discuss, and what an amazing reaction against Manchester United. We had our greatest performance of the season, in my opinion.”
