Lawrence Shankland could have scored vital goals for Rangers this season that their current forwards have failed to do.

Stephen McGinn believes this could cost them the league title.

The Light Blues are now three points behind rivals Celtic, with no games in hand,

after losing to Ross County and drawing with Dundee yesterday night.

Big opportunities were lost by the likes of Cyriel Dessers and Fabio Silva in those games,

but with six games remaining, McGinn couldn’t believe what he was seeing on manager Philippe Clement’s squad sheet before Dens Park.

Kemar Roofe had been injured all season, yet he was thrown into the deep end for the big game.

Given that it concluded 0-0, the gamble failed.

McGinn, on the other hand, saw an easier solution to his goal-scoring problems in Hearts striker Shankland,

who had been connected with Ibrox since January.

If they had spent more money to bring in the proven goal scorer, more points would have been earned,

and the Falkirk skipper feels they would be top dogs right now.

“I could not believe the team when I saw Kemar Roofe,” McGinn told GO Radio.

“You talk about Celtic and the stick they’ve gotten for transfer windows;

if you’d told me in January that Rangers were going to play Kemar Roofe with six games to go in a title race,

I’d have doubled down and said no – you need to sign Lawrence Shankland.”

Rangers had a 1-0 lead despite their terrible play, and Cyriel Dessers had an opportunity to score.

“That goes to 2-0, the atmosphere shifts, and they score three points.

You go to Dundee, and it’s all about scoring three points.

Going into January, there were two major issues: a creative midfielder and  a striker.

The two strikers they had the other night – Fabio Silva is on the wing and Cyriel Dessers is on the bench,

and they turn to Kemar Roofe who hasn’t been fit for most of the season.

“Had they signed Lawrence Shankland, I believe they would be at the top of the league right now.

They have not invested the £3-4 million required for guaranteed goals against teams like Motherwell.

I watched the game against Motherwell again, and I believe Lawrence Shankland would have scored that day.
