Lewis-Skelly and Nwaneri Might Influence Arsenal’s Transfer Plans

This summer’s transfer strategy of Arsenal may be impacted by two 17-year-old academy players, Lewis-Skelly and Nwaneri.

Every Premier League team will be thinking about how many players they have developed domestically and how that will change over the next several years.

In the medium and long terms, the Gunners will not be any different, and their best young prospects will have a say.

That’s according to David Ornstein of The Athletic, who responded to a query on Thursday afternoon on homegrown players and the transfer market in his most recent Q&A.

He mentioned Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri as Arsenal potential who could influence the club’s decision to add more English players in the future.

They will be looking for those two to have a significant influence at the Emirates Stadium for many years to come, as will everyone at Arsenal.

Ornstein was questioned: “Do you believe Arsenal would aim to explicitly bring in players regarded as ‘homegrown’ in the summer transfer window – in order to help with the quota?

Ramsdale, Tierney, Nketiah, Nelson, and potentially Smith Rowe are rumored to leave the club this summer. If yes, are there any particular names that we should be aware of?”

He responded: “Although this is not something that has specifically come up in the conversations I’ve had around potential targets for Arsenal this summer, of course it is a consideration for every PL club when squad planning.

“Sorry for the dry response, but ultimately it will depend on who leaves and how many people stay, with academy graduates like Nwaneri and Lewis-Skelly undoubtedly having an impact on both.

Most of the names I’ve heard mentioned as potential additions right now wouldn’t be considered homegrown, but early in the summer, several players who Tottenham, for instance, had on their radar were very deliberately homegrown (like Maddison).

More generally speaking, Arsenal is actively working to increase the number of homegrown players.

In 2016, Ethan Nwaneri, now 17 years old, enrolled in the Arsenal academy at the age of nine.

Having played for the club’s under-18 squad since he was 14 years old, he was a member of the young Gunners squad that advanced to the FA Youth Cup final in 2022–2023.

At the under-16 and under-17 levels, he has already played for England in two Premier League games.

Myles Lewis-Skelly, a 17-year-old midfielder, has been with Arsenal since he was eight years old.

Although he has not yet made an appearance in the main team for Arsenal, he is well-regarded in the academy football circles and plays for the England under-18 squad. Jack Wilshere, the under-18s coach for the Gunners, has praised him in public.

Both guys, who are still only 17 years old, have promising futures and might play important roles for Arsenal. Maintaining them for several years to come will undoubtedly help Arsenal in the transfer market.
