Premier League issues FFP appeal update as Nottingham Forest and Everton wait to learn their fate

The Premier League has stated that it is doing all possible to guarantee that demoted teams

know their destiny by the end of the 2023/24 season,

regardless of whether they have appealed against points deductions.

Nottingham Forest’s appeal against a four-point profitability and sustainability rules fine,

part of football’s much-maligned financial fair play code, is expected to commence the week of April 22.

And, following Everton’s announcement that they will appeal a two-point penalty for their second PSR infringement –

the league has now stated that it will do everything possible to ensure the outcome of their

latest hearing is known before the final round of matches.

According to a league statement, Everton Football Club has filed an appeal against an

independent commission’s decision to impose a two-point deduction on the club following its admission of a breach of

the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability standards.

“An appeal board was constituted to consider the case after the club filed an appeal with the chair of the judicial panel.

The matter will be heard on an accelerated basis in accordance with the league’s usual procedures.

“For clarity and certainty for all clubs and fans, the Premier League will be seeking to have

the appeal resolved urgently with the outcome confirmed in advance of Sunday, May 19, the last day of this season.”

According to the league report, the next 10 days could determine who survives in the top flight between Forest and Everton.

They meet at Goodison Park on Sunday (1.30pm kick-off) before the Reds’ appeal is heard by an independent commission

in the days following the match. Then comes the Everton choice.

Everton and Forest are presently 16th and 17th in the Premier League, separated by only one point.

The Reds drew 2-2 with Wolves over the weekend, while Everton lost 6-0 against Chelsea on Monday.

That means both clubs have -16 goal differential, with the Merseysiders having lost fewer games than the Reds.

However, a change in their point penalty could have a significant impact on who finishes outside the bottom three on May 19.

The league’s standard directions were agreed upon by clubs at last summer’s Premier League annual general meeting,

and their purpose is to ensure that PSR case outcomes are known in the same season as any charge is laid,

and before Premier League’shares’ change hands between relegated clubs and those promoted from the Championship.
