Journalist names 3 Sunderland gems he’d ‘really like’ to see play for the first-team chance this month

It has been suggested that Mike Dodds start Sunderland’s three academy players in their final three games.

Sunderland has only lost once in their last six games while

recording five clean sheets, suggesting that they are back on track.

While Chris Rigg has continued to play a regular role in the squad, Mike Dodds has been able to rotate the starting lineup in recent games

and has included Timothee Pembele for the first time this season.

Despite their inability to finish higher than midtable, the Black Cats have yet to try out any additional academy players.

Though Dodds has previously stated that he still like to win games, it was previously anticipated that he would bring some young players

into the fold to offer them some senior experience when results don’t really matter.

James Copley ‘would really like’ to see academy trio

Sunderland now have fixtures against Millwall, Watford and Sheffield Wednesday remaining, and journalist James Copley has

encouraged the club to give opportunities to three particular academy stars.

Ahead of the U21s match against Middlesbrough last night, Copley wrote on X: “Would really like to see Watson, Bainbridge and Harrison

Jones play for the first team before the season ends.”

Watson, Jones, and Bainbridge were all given starts once more as Sunderland lost the Wear-Tees derby 2-1.

At the Academy of Light, Watson scored his third goal in three games,

bringing his season total of goal contributions to ten in just 14 games.

Watson, Bainbridge & Jones – what have we got to lose?

The teenager earned his senior debut at the end of the previous season, and supporters have made it known that they want to see him

given an opportunity in the first squad.

Given that Dodds has previously stated that he wants to exercise extreme caution while managing Aji Alese’s playing time, it also appears

to be the ideal time to give Bainbridge an opportunity.

Callum Styles and Leo Hjelde have had a difficult time adjusting to life at the Stadium of Light, so it seems like a terrific opportunity for

the young left-back to establish himself in the last games.

In the middle of the park, Jones doesn’t face much competition either.

This season, Dan Neil has been outstanding, while Pierre Ekwah has only had sporadic periods of success and is easily replaceable.

Sunderland will probably make midfield additions this summer, but before spending a lot of money on a new young midfield player from

overseas, they really ought to consider their best possibilities in the academy.
