£5m Deal: Andy Halliday behind striker claim which has sealed Kemar Roofe’s Rangers fate.

When the contract for the former Ibrox midfielder expired in the summer of 2020, he was released, and a few months later, Anderlecht’s Kemar Roofe joined.

Although the Rangers won their 55th championship that summer, Roofe’s four years in Glasgow have been dominated by injuries, and his contract expires in the summer.

When discussing the Rangers striker predicament, Andy Halliday questioned the clamour for Kemar Roofe to take Cyriel Dessers’ spot in the starting eleven.

The Motherwell midfielder believes Jamaican opponent Kemar Roofe may be leaving Ibrox in addition to endorsing Nigerian international Dessers.

Cyriel Dessers is Rangers’ “best striker”

Speaking on Clyde Superscoreboard (15/04/24), Andy Halliday began by talking about the Rangers’ January failures.

A striker was the Ibrox supporters’ #1 priority, so when Portuguese forward Fabio Silva signed on loan, there was a lot of conjecture about Lawrence Shankland.

Halliday asserts that Dessers is not a “out-and-out” striker and believes the Portuguese player will start for Rangers in the final stretch.

Cyriel Dessers, who missed his opportunity to defeat Ross County once more, has been heavily criticized in the wake of his remarks.

“Any fan of Rangers will concur (the team needed to acquire a striker in January),” stated Halliday.

“You knew going into the January transfer window that Philippe Clement might add two or three players.”

“You had the impression that the position with the highest priority was an all-around striker, and they seemed to have brought that in with Fabio Silva.”

“However, I believe that anyone who has seen him will notice that he has never looked like an all-around striker; instead, he always seems to be someone who prefers to drive at a back four or arrive in the box rather than play with his back to goal.

“Dessers is going to play this weekend, and the week after that as well, since, in my opinion, he’s currently the best striker Rangers have to offer.”

Andy Halliday says “no doubt” about Kemar Roofe future

During the conversation that followed, Andy Halliday questioned whether Cyriel Dessers was superior to the recuperating Rangers hitman in regards to Kemar Roofe.

The midfielder is adamant that Roofe will be let go when his contract expires in the summer, casting doubt on the striker’s four seasons of Rangers service.

When asked if Dessers was superior to Kemar Roofe, Andy Halliday responded, “Yeah, for me.”

“Where is the proof that Kemar Roofe is as skilled as people portray him to be in the event of an injury?

“He’s performed decently for the Rangers at times, but what is the longest streak of games that Kemar Roofe has ever had? It can’t possibly be that many.

In response to the question of whether Kemar Roofe will depart in the summer, Halliday said, “Aw yeah, I don’t think there’s any doubt about it.”

“He’s obviously not been very fit, and—I’m speculating here—you imagine he’s on quite a big wage. Listen, we know there’s talent there.”

Particularly considering the amount Rangers had to pay to sign him to a football contract.

“But in my opinion, Dessers is currently Rangers’ best striker, and I think he will play on.”

Following a £5 million summer transfer from Cremonese, Cyriel Dessers has made 47 appearances for Rangers, contributing to 25 goals and scoring 17.

Although Kemar Roofe was more expensive in 2020, he has made 21 appearances so far this season, starting just seven games and scored just two goals.
