Former referees Des Roache and Steve Conroy have called for Celtic midfielder Reo Hatate to face a two-game suspension for what they deemed to be a dive during the game.

The incident occurred in the 18-yard box, and the referee elected not to award a penalty, instead waving play on.

The plea for retrospective action was made in a tweet from the Behind the Whistles podcast account, which is controlled by Roache and Conroy. The message read:

“If we want to get this kind of thing out of our game,

the Governing Body needs to bring in retrospective sanctions like a two-game ban.”

This declaration comes after a week of heated debate over Fabio Silva’s diving during the previous Glasgow Derby match.

Minimal contact resulted in a dive that was initially punished but later converted to a penalty following VAR intervention.

Hatate’s fall in the penalty area was the result of a simple collide with an opponent; the midfielder did not appeal for a penalty.

There was contact, but it did not result in a penalty, which was consistent with the referee’s ruling throughout the match.

The former referees’ plea for a ban is excessive; there were no such concerns last week.
